Some advice about study and research from the seminar
- Use some overview texts such as the “For Dummies “ and “Idiot’s Guide to “ series to reinforce your basic knowledge of a topic
- Worldbook online www.worldbookonline.com also provides a broad overview of many topics, as well as some primary source material including short film clips or recording of famous speeches.
Epping boys and staff can access Worldbook Online using the a usernane and password that you can access at the library.
- Become familiar with the key people; movements; ideas and concepts related to that topic! [These can form your search terms for further research.] Ask your classroom teacher for good sources as well as important search terms.
- A Glossary is a good thing. Especially in subjects such as Business and Legal studies correct understanding and use of the subject’s vocabulary ( meta language ) is vital.
- Resources such as the LegalDate; EcoDate and BusiDate articles are excellent for modelling accurate use of meta language and providing excellent current content. These are available in the EBHS library and through Social Science staff in print and digital form.
- Once you have your search terms, Google Scholar is a very good starting point for online research. www.scholar.google.com
- Record your research as you go, e.g. with a word document containing web addresses, book, magazine or DVD sources. [See our Bibliography booklet to get the details about recording references correctly.]
J Stor
- J Stor is a complex, sophisticated and large database that requires careful searching
- You log into J Stor using your membership number
- One of the most efficient ways to use J Stor is to find articles in Google Scholar that are located in J Stor and copy the reference across for the search.
- Skills that you develop now in searching J Stor and other databases effectively will be useful (and time saving !) preparation for university study especially in Humanities subjects.
Good luck with your research
